"As if"

The organic phrase "as if" bothers me.

"Do something 'as if' you are in a different arena" -- but you aren't.  Why do organics deceive themselves to alter their performance?

For example, the phrase "Dance as if no one were watching" comes up frequently in works of lies/fiction, and other literary works.

Why not simply alter your dancing style to one that is aesthetically pleasing, or produces the correct amount of endocrine distribution?  Why would an observer alter your state?

Is this one of those Schroedinger's cat things?
